3a  Programmes with a very low Carbon footprint.

During the lockdown 2021  through zoom, we conducted the same training programme every week. Around 500 Clergy, 600 teachers, and 1000 students attended the training classes. After each class, we conducted a quiz programme to test how much they had grasped from the lecture. We gave cash awards to the quiz winners. The total expense for these programmes is very meagre compared to the physical meetings. We have saved travel expenses, electricity, room rent,  food etc. The most important thing is that the carbon footprint is minimal. More than that, we are reaching out to an average of  400 Clergy,600 teachers, 1000 students every month.
We have been conducting a series of lectures through Zoom for the members of 23 Dioceses in five states of South India from January 2021 onwards on Tuesdays and  Wednesdays.

Resilience is strengthening the ability of human and non-human systems to withstand and respond to changes in the Earth’s climate. It can be seen as a way to bridge the conceptual divide between mitigation approaches to climate change on the one hand and adaptation approaches on the other. Mitigation is to address climate change by cutting down greenhouse gas emissions. In order to avoid the gravest effects of a changing climate, humanity needs to limit the average global surface temperature to 2ºC above pre-industrial levels, but preferably 1.5ºC. In order to do that,  we need to cut our greenhouse gas emissions above 50 percent by 2050, lest we face serious risks, including more intense storms, droughts, and heat waves, all of which pose looming threats to human civilization and the Environment. On the other hand, adaptation acknowledges that, even if we immediately cut our carbon emissions altogether, the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases would remain well above normal levels for decades to come. In short,  we need to adapt to a changing climate, or else we risk severe damage.

Adaptation approaches vary based on geography, time, funding resources, levels of political support, and dozens of other factors. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to adaptation.Resilience recognizes that Mitigation and adaptation are two sides of the same coin.

We need both Mitigation and adaptation to surmount the enormous challenge of climate change. The C.S.I. Synod has taken up Climate Justice Ministry as a project by giving training to Clergy and teachers. Climate Resilient Schools and Communities is different from the Green School Programme. In the Green School programme, students are doing auditing on air, water, waste, energy, land and food. They are relating it with their curriculum and preparing their School for Green rating.

In climate Resilient Schools and Communities,  the students of the School are practising the Green Protocol of C.S.I., Carbon neutrality, Mitigation and adaptation. These Children will have to transform their houses in the same way they do in schools—a community transformation through students. We are planning to create some community-resilient model schools and model communities.

The richness and Carbon footprint

Dr.T.V. Sajeev

The Planet is not affected by the poor but by the rich. When rich people take more than their share from natural resources, they increase their footprint. Only by being poor you can understand the whole world. We have to take concrete measures to bring down the carbon footprint. What is the notion of success for our people? When I sell my bicycle and purchase a motorcycle, I will be acclaimed as a successful person. When I purchase a Motor car, I will be a successful person. When I build a big house, I will be looked upon as a successful person. I remain the same, but I increase the carbon emission every time. Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath[a]; humans have no advantage over animals. How shall we then live at a time in which, regardless of religious and scientific beliefs, we humans are having a greater effect on the Planet in which we live than ever before? What does this have to do with Christian faith and Christian theology? To the great, worldwide ecological discussion, Christians can contribute renewed theologies of Creation and of Hope, stimulated by the conviction that a good God never intended this good Creation to be expunged. Ecological Reformation and Peace on Earth

Rev.Dr.D.R.Sadananda

What we can do as a community of faith. Vision and discernment we get through this small parable. For this talk I would like to concentrate on Priestly and Prophetic tasks. The priestly task of Christianity in bringing together the eco-theology  alive in liturgical vision of the Church and the world. To see the world in God’s eyes. The prophetic task is about discernment. Another world is possible. Another world is already there. It is spoken in different ways. Reformed will say it is only a restoration of the Creation. Roman Catholic will say it is an elevation of the Creation. Orthodox theology emphase on divinization of the Creation. Ecological reading of Revelation

  1. P. Joseph

The huge majority of the world’s population cannot destroy the ecosystem. To destroy, one needs tools and power. Therefore, we need a new approach. Present discourse on alternatives is also based on these assumptions proposed by the same dominant logic, thinking that the problem could be fixed by planting trees, changing light bulbs, or finding alternatives to fossil fuels. This fixing approach is to save the present logic of the exploitative economic order. And that is where we need to read the Book of Revelation to gain new insights. John, the political prisoner, caged on the island of Patmos, was not satisfied with this fixing approach. He offers instead a clash of kingdoms: The kingdom of the world and the kingdom of the Slaughtered Lamb. This is our choice: the rule of capital or the rule of love and justice. Dr.M.P Joseph, delivered the keynote address. Rt.Rev. Thomas Mar Theethos. Bishop of Marthoma Church inaugurated the Webinar.

An Ecumenical Climate Justice declaration

(A joint declaration by the environmentalists attended in the one-day Conference held on July 30 2022 at C.M.S. College, Kottayam from the C.S.I., Marthoma, Orthodox, Jacobite, Catholic Churches and other sectors. Dr.Roxy Mathew Koll (Scientist,Lead Author of the IPCC Reports) and  Dr.T.V.Sajeev(Scientist, Forest Research Institute) served as Resource persons in this Conference on the impacts of the Climate Change- Adaptation, Mitigation)

We, the participants of the Conference on the impacts of Climate Change, Adaptation, Mitigation organized by C.S.I. Synod Department of Ecological Concerns in association with the C.M.S. College, Kottayam, on July 30, stand in defence of a global climate system that is safe for all Creations. The Earth is overburdened and overloaded with a greedy lifestyle, a society driven by a corporate-centred economy and growing disparity. Soil, water, air, forest, mountain, and animal is slowly dying and in extinction due to heavy exploitation and irresponsible behaviour. We demand a world where our children and future generations are assured of fair and just opportunities for social stability, employment, a healthy planet and prosperity.

We are united in the need for an urgent response to the climate crisis – a response informed by the current impacts of climate. The impacts on Creation, their rights, habitats, food security and ecosystems can no longer be ignored. Nor can we overlook the injustice faced by the poorest and most vulnerable, who bear a disproportionate burden from the impacts of climate change.

This reality drives our vision of climate justice. Our vision acknowledges the injustices caused by climate change and the responsibility of those who have caused it. It requires us to build a common future based on justice for those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and a just transition to a safe and secure society and Planet for all creations.

Global warming is increasing. The amount of carbon dioxide has crossed 440ppm, and hurricanes, cyclones, earthquakes, droughts, and floods are now frequent. In the carbon economy, this is inevitable. We have to foresee the end of a carbon economy. The Church should act as a catalyst in building a new sustainable economy. Indeed, the Church could not bring out such a new economic order that involves political, economic, social, and other dimensions. At present, we have to work to transform our economic system into one based on low-carbon production and consumption that can create inclusive, sustainable development and reduce inequality. As a global community, we must innovate now to enable us to leave the majority of the remaining fossil fuel reserves in the ground – driving our transition to a resilient climate future.

Climate justice also means free worldwide access to breakthrough technologies for the transition to sustainability, like efficient solar panels and new chemical energy storage schemes. Governments must commit to bold action informed by science and deliver on commitments made in the climate change regime to reduce emissions and provide climate finance, particularly for the most vulnerable countries.Strong legal frameworks can provide certainty to ensure transparency, longevity, credibility and effective enforcement of climate and related policies.

We firmly proclaim our deep-rooted faith in caring for and nurturing our common household – God’s Earth as a fundamental Christian obligation. We, environmentally concerned people of various churches in Kerala, advocate for turning our churches into Green Churches by 2030 by implementing the Green Protocol for Water conservation, Energy Conservation, Waste Management, Agriculture, Fellowship meetings and Ecofriendly constructions. On Developmental activities, intergenerational equity should be followed. We request all the churches and their institutions for a Green Audit(energy, water, waste, land, etc.) We will advocate for climate justice and a resilient society by urging government, corporate and global leaders. We offer hope and peace to the world and commit to working together for a healthy and sustainable future.
